An opinion piece by Hannah Smith ’14 about the relevancy of women’s colleges in the current political age was posted by The Huffington Post on Feb. 12. In the article, titled “Women’s Underrepresentation in Politics Makes Women’s Colleges Relevant,” Smith argues that women’s colleges can play a major role in remedying the substantial gender gap in the political world.
From the Huffington Post article:
“Women’s colleges do more than just four years of educating; they have been proven to foster leadership skills and self-esteem among their students and alumnae, which is important considering lack of confidence is one of the major reasons why women do not pursue public office.”
In 2011, Smith was published on the New York Times blog “The Choice” about her experience choosing and attending a women’s college.
